Principles

Beyond the Sky, Cuts #1++ (Brian Keane and Omar Farouk Tekbilkek)

"Pelvic Awakening": Principle 4 of the Level 1 Principles (introductory / grounding): A floorwork move, using slow pelvic rotations, to reconnect with how we can generate a full spinal twist starting with our pelvis. We start the turn with pelvis (rotation inward), ribs, shoulders, head, and then reverse: head, shoulders, ribs, pelvis, postural alignment.

Zill Practice

Zill introduction: How to assemble and hold your zills. How to make a good "zill sound." Basic patterns: triplets and alternating runs.

Introduction to basic rhythms: Beledi, a fundamental 8/8 rhtyhm. Counting and clapping the beledi.

Basic Technique (Technique Development / Review)

Variations on in-place beledi combinations; two staccatos plus a "circular" (see Kathryn Ferguson video for good reference/demo), review "transition" from side-to-side (technique courtesy Anahid Sofian).

Challenge Choreography 1 (Beginners)

"Drum Solo ," on Belly Dance for Fame and Fortune, Cut #6 (The Mogador Band)

Review the drum solo: Identify basic rhythms, choreography for first two motifs (sets of 2 8-count patterns). Handout: Drum Solo Choreography, Part 1a.

On Your Own: Recommended "Homework"

  • Principles - Level 1 : Practice the "Anchoring" and "Lotus Flower" exercises as often as you can, throughout the day. Practice "torso release" and do as much total body stretching as you can.
  • Zills: Practice basic triplets (4 sets) alternating with 2 triplets and an alternating run (3-3-3-3 vs. 3-3-7).
  • Music: Order your music, start listening to Hossam Ramzy's "Introduction to Egyptian Dance Rhythms." Practice basic hip drops / simple pelvic moves, catching the main beats of various rhythms. Focus on beledii.
  • Recommended Reading: Order your books and/or obtain from local library.
