Level
2 is demanding, challenging, and absolutely essential if you want
to become a powerful dancer. This Level is all about relaxing
and releasing your body, and the tensions stored within. We have created
these tensions come from many sources, ranging from childhood issues and
traumas, to our emotional experiences growing up (and resultant tendency
to "block off" painful areas), to the stress of everyday life. (Even a
day sitting at a computer yields its own type of tension.)
In
order to connect with our audiences, we must first connect with ourselves.
In order to connect with ourselves, we must release our physical tensions.
The most intrinsic and innate movements of this dance art deal with "release"
movements traveling up and down our spine, and moving in a figure-eight
pattern within our sacro-iliac joint (at the bottom of our spine). In
Level 2, we learn to release accumulated tensions and allow these
movements to flow naturally and freely. It is then that we become a powerful,
amazing, and awe-inspiring dancer.
The
best dancers in the world -- the ones who touch our hearts and souls --
do so because they have mastered their Level 2 releases.
Following
Western esoteric tradition, Level 2 corresponds to the element
of air, and to using our minds for discernment and study. Thus, at Level
2, you are encouraged to start reading and studying certain texts
that will describe things that you may not yet have experienced. An example
study is the Microcosmic Orbit; a foundational energy practice
from Taoist energy medicine.
It
takes time to study these materials, and to master even basic energy practicess.
You can cheerfully and confidently anticipate spending years at Level
2. (I've spent over twenty years at this Level , and frequently
need to return to Level 2 practices and exercises.) Keep in mind,
if all that you ever do is combined Level 1 and Level 2
work, you will be an amazingly better dancer than 99% of the people around
you.
