Why the Sacred ... and the Profane ...
Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance
To us, being sacred relates more to being
set apart than it relates
to something that has a specific religious meaning. Likewise, being profane
has more to do with being everyday or ordinary than it does with something that
is a violation of the sacred. This is why Mircea Eliade's ideas about
sacred space
and
sacred time
are relevant to our performance. We are actually creating both a sacred space
and a sacred time when we perform for you.

Amustela |
Amustela writes: |

"The veil is a piece of cloth - nothing more. It
has been used thourghout time to cover religious icons, act
as a barrier to the mystical places of the temple or conceal
the beauty of a woman..."

"The veil has been used to cover the bride to
protect her from evil intent of malicious spirits and to cover
the sacrament in the holiest of ceremonies. A piece of cloth
only - but we are always mesmerized and transformed but what
lies underneath. Sometimes the veil can also conceal that which
is most hidden inside us, such as a sensuous nature, a painful
memory or a Phoenix about to rise from the ashes. Unveiling
is an exercise in vulnerability - revealing the passion that
lies within. It can reveal to the world those parts of us we
want most to bury deep inside. It is as mystical as it is liberating.
"In the hands
of an artist this piece of cloth can become the doorway to one's
soul."

Controversial. Politicized. Mandatory in some places, banned
in others. So much furor about a square of fabric

We are reaching back to very ancient roots - to a time when
expression of art and experience of the sacred were often
one and the same. We are bringing this perspective into the
present day, so that creating art, even in the context of
a dinner theatre - is also a means for creating community,
and both
experiencing and expressing the sacred in our lives.
